Sulawesi is shaped like a tropical orchid, each “petal” a peninsula, ridged with lofty mountains and surrounded by coral reefs. It is Indonesia’s third-largest island, with an area of 172,000 square km and the world's 11th-largest island. Like all of Indonesia there is much cultural diversity here comprised of four major ethnic groups. The population is about 20,304,437.The largest city on Sulawesi is Makassar. The economy of Sulawesi is heavily centered around agriculture, fishing, mining, and forestry.

Flores is one of the Lesser Sunda Islands, a group of islands in the eastern half of Indonesia. The population is estimated to be 1,931,000. To the north, beyond the Flores Sea, is Sulawesi. In addition to tourism, the main economic activities on Flores are agriculture, fishing and seaweed production.
